There are plans to install a new bridge over the Ashton Canal, to make it easier to walk and cycle in the area. The proposed bridge will make it easier for residents north of the canal, at Old Mill Street and the Marina to access the Metrolink tram stop at New Islington Green and will also provide a useful crossing for the various new developments in the area.

Currently there is an informal footbridge over the canal that is for the operation of the lock, but when the lock is in use the footbridge cannot be used.  With new developments planned in the area, a new bridge will be installed to accommodate the increase in people in the area who are likely to want to use the crossing. Features of the bridge include lighting to deter anti-social behaviour, and a 'non-slip' surface for safety. The 'Electric Park' development on the southern side of canal is proposing a number of public realm improvements including seating, and new footpaths, making more people want to visit the area.

This is an artist's impression of what the bridge would look like, and a map showing where it would be.

An artist's representation of the proposed bridge. It shows people crossing the bridge itself, as well as well-lit stairs down to the canal.

The bridge will be built between Ashton Canal Tow Path and the New Islington tram stop.
