Consultation: new SEND school for north Manchester

We want to know what people think of our proposals for a new Secondary Special School at Sawley Road, Miles Platting. We’re planning to open the school in September 2024 in response to growing demand for specialist provision.

The proposals

This new school will be for boys and girls with an Education, Health and Care Plan, and will have space for 150 pupils aged between 11 and 19 years old. The new school will be established as a Free School as determined by national policy. Find out more about school types at: https://www.gov.uk/types-of-school/overview

The school’s design is for a single single-storey building with a double-height main hall, external playing fields, games area and car parking. The school’s hall and games area will be available for use by the community outside of school hours, providing a valuable resource to the local area.

With modern facilities and a high-quality environment, the new school will help more Manchester children meet their full potential and benefit from the city’s growth.

To minimise traffic disruption during the school’s construction, vehicles will access the site via Nelson Street. Once the school is open, a new in-and-out vehicle route along Sawley Road will help avoid traffic build-up.

The site:

The proposal seeks to maintain as many of the existing mature trees that line Sawley Road and Vickers Street as possible. This will lessen the visual impact of the development and provide a sense of privacy for the school’s students.

As part of the early works to the site and to ensure nesting season is avoided, some tree removal will take place before the end of February 2023. Any trees removed will be replaced as part of the project landscape plan.

The proposed development will target Manchester’s Low Carbon Strategy and BREEAM’s Excellent Standard to ensure the school’s sustainable design, construction, and future operation.

What do you think?

We want to hear what you think of these proposals; take part in our online consultation by Sunday 26 February 2023.

Location:

The site is bordered by Sawley Road and James Street, reaching almost all the way to Hulme Hall Lane.
