Bridge closure
Update: 8 October Planning permission has been granted for the removal of the existing bridge. We are aiming to start work on site at the end of October. Thee bridge removal should be completed by the end of November.
Bailey Bridge is now closed due to safety concerns. The bridge is on the River Mersey, near Chorlton Water Park. After investigation, we found we cannot open the bridge to the public as it is not safe to use.
The closure will be in place throughout summer and possibly for up to 12 months. A contractor has been appointed to design and install a new bridge. The old bridge needs to be removed so surveyors can examine the bridge supports and determine if they need any repairs. A planning application has been submitted to remove the old bridge (reference: 140821/DEM/2024). Once the old bridge is removed, and surveys completed, we will be able to set out a timescale for the installation of the new bridge.
We know this is a popular route. So, we're working to design and install a new crossing point as soon as possible.
We're reviewing the diversion route to ensure it's easy to use, easy to find and more accessible. We're working with key stakeholders to ensure the best possible diversion. We want it to feel good for everyone – whether you're walking or wheeling. If you have suggestions, please contact us.
We understand how disruptive and disappointing this is. The safety of our residents and visitors is our primary concern. We'll keep you updated every step of the way. For more information email parks@manchester.gov.uk.
The diverted route is around 1.09 miles (1.75km).
