Homes and property Help and advice services

Help if you have a mental illness or impairment

If you have a mental illness or impairment, we might be able to give you extra help if you are homeless, or are likely to become homeless.

When looking at your homeless application we will consider the following:

  • the nature and extent of your mental illness/disability
  • the relationship between your illness/disability and your housing difficulties
  • any other issues that might have an impact on your health and housing, such as drug or alcohol problems.

We will:

  • work with the agencies involved in your care and support
  • assess your housing needs
  • set out a personal housing plan for you, that outlines what you - and we - must do to find suitable accommodation. This may be in either private rented or social housing.

If you have a mental illness or impairment there are advice and support services available in Manchester that could help prevent you from becoming homeless. These include:

You may also be entitled to help, support or social care

If your mental illness or impairment means that your current home is unsuitable, you may qualify for additional priority for rehousing, if a move to a new home would improve your condition.

Manchester Move offers advice.
