The Council and democracy Green and blue infrastructure

Case studies

A wide range of Green Infrastructure initiatives took place across the city over the last few years. They varied in nature and scale, yet all provide a mix of benefits to the community, the environment and the economy. These benefits contribute to the overall quality of the city and are an integral part of Our Manchester’s vision for the future; creating a liveable city that is clean, safe and attractive.

Our case studies really help bring the strategy to life, and are part of a much larger portfolio of best practice examples. From community greening, growing and volunteering  projects to large scale complex landscape transformations, they all help tell the story of Manchester’s journey from grey to green.

  • River Medlock restoration - award winning £400,000 river renaturalisation project, improving 400 metres of heavily modified river.
  • Moston Fairway Forest School - community engagement project to engage families and young children with the natural environment.
  • Tree Musketeers UoM conservation volunteers - University of Manchester project, aimed to encourage volunteering to gain hands-on practical experience in a range of conservation tasks.
  • St. Peter’s Square regeneration - large scale, complex public realm transformation project, including Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) enabled tree pits and 42 mature trees planted.
  • Bridgewater basin floating ecosystems - introduction of 200m2 of floating plant islands which improve water quality, aesthetic and biodiversity in the city centre.
  • Manchester ‘Clean Streams’ project - £150,000 Clean City project  to work with communities to restore five watercourses across the city.
