The Council and democracy Climate Change Action Plan - Progress Update Q4 Jan to Mar 2021

Workstream #2 - Travel and transport

Progress report - workstream #2

(updates included where progress has been made this quarter)

2.1 Technical issues with the electrical charging infrastructure at Hammerstone Road depot and with the electric refuse collection vehicles has caused minor delays but the naming  competition received 600 entries and all vehicles are expected to be with the Council next quarter.

2.4 The Princess Road and Medlock Street roundabout improvement scheme is now complete. The scheme creates a safer environment for both cyclists and pedestrians replacing the existing network of underpasses with new, safer access.

A 6-month pilot scheme is underway in Levenshulme and North Burnage Active Neighbourhood. A key target of the approach is to reduce the number of vehicle journeys and improve air quality. Work has also commenced in relation to Beswick Active Neighbourhood and later phases of Chorlton Cycleway.

Proposals for the new Northern and Eastern Gateway walking and cycling scheme has gone out to consultation and will close in March. Changes were made to the design following a previous round of consultation.

2.5 The Greater Manchester Combined Authority has formally adopted the Greater Manchester 2040 Strategy and five-year delivery plan 2021-2026. This will support Manchester to facilitate the modal shift to more sustainable transport, in line with the 'Right-Mix' vision for all journeys in Greater Manchester to be made by walking, cycling and public transport by 2040.
