Roads and transport Bollards

Using the bollards and number plate recognition

Using the bollard system

The bollard system has a traffic light situated in the driver's line of sight.

You must wait for the signal to give you a green light. You can then move safely through the automatic bollards.

You must never try to access the system if the traffic indicator column is showing a red light. The bollards have safety loops which detect when a vehicle is over the bollard system and so will not rise under a vehicle.

There is no intercom at the bollard system and so the bollards cannot be lowered by request.

You will not be able to access an area secured with automatic bollards if you have not pre-registered your vehicle and personal details for a permit.

Number plate recognition technology

The system is based on ANPR which is used in many car parks and other locations across our cities to manage and control access.

The system recognises number plates in all lighting and weather conditions and does not record movements of people in surrounding areas.

ANPR use is covered by Manchester City Council’s CCTV Code of Practice meaning we have to include ‘CCTV’ on advisory road signage close to the bollards, but it is not a CCTV system as commonly understood.

Images captured by the ANPR system – an image of vehicles on approach to the camera and a close up of the registration plate – are deleted after 30 days.
