Heaton Park Boating Lake

The boating lake was not part of the original estate, but constructed between 1908 and 1912 on the site of the Earl of Wilton's race course. Teams of previously unemployed men created the 12 acre lake with three islands using only shovels and hand pulled carts over two winters. The original estimate for costs were £17,457.

It quickly became an attraction to locals where they could hire rowing boats, a skiff or even ride the famous Heaton Belle steam boat.
