Social services Housing options and support

What your Personal Adviser can help with

We will support you to make a Housing Benefit claim, or to access local housing allowance if you are in private rented accommodation. You’ll also be a high priority for social housing, which means you’re more likely to get a property if you apply for one.

Your Personal Adviser will:

  • help you get a ‘setting up home’ grant of up to £2,000 for your first property - this is for things like a cooker, furniture, crockery and insurance.
  • support you with moving in to your first independent property, including help getting a moving company to move your things to your new place (one move only)
  • visit you within seven days of you moving into your new home.
  • advise you on maintaining a tenancy, including how to pay bills and avoid getting into arrears with your rent.
  • help you get an ‘exemption’ from Council Tax, meaning you won’t have to pay it until you are 21 if you’re living in Greater Manchester.
  • provide you with a Preparation for Independence toolkit, which has a lot of detailed info that will help you live independently.
  • make sure you never end up without a home.

You can also chat to an expert face-to-face about your home (or something else like your health or your career) at one of our regular drop-in sessions.

If you’re a care leaver and experiencing a housing emergency, for example you are about to become homeless, speak to your Personal Adviser or call 0161 234 5001 immediately.
