The Council and democracy Original budget 2017-20

Vision for 2025

The Our Manchester ten-year ambitions are the touchstone when decisions are taken about what to prioritise, and set the framework for the Council’s work and budgets to make our city:

  • Thriving – creating jobs and healthy businesses
  • Filled with talent – both home grown talent and attracting the best in the World
  • Fair – with equal chances for all to unlock their potential
  • A great place to live – with lots of things to do
  • Buzzing with connections – including world class transport and broadband.

Based on residents’ priorities

Our priorities have also been informed by the extensive budget consultation with residents carried out in 2016.

The things that mattered most and which are reflected in our budget decisions are:

  • care and support for vulnerable people including older people and those with learning disabilities and mental health needs
  • taking action on family poverty and giving young people the best start in life
  • tackling homelessness
  • supporting people into jobs and training
  • keeping roads and neighbourhoods in good shape; and
  • parks and leisure to keep people active and happy.

The 2017-20 budget set out the changes required to deliver all this by:

  • bringing health and social care services together
  • supporting people earlier so they will avoid more costly help later
  • safely reducing the cost of children in care by finding more foster carers
  • changing the waste disposal arrangements to reduce costs; and
  • creating the capacity to invest in the city’s roads and transport network.
