Repairing drainage gullies and pipework

We have allocated an extra £1.8m from the £100m highway funds to boost the cleaning of roadside gullies. This will give an overall investment of £4m.

Gullies, which drain water off roads, can become blocked by dirt, debris, oil and fat, tree roots, and litter, all of which can cause roads or pavements to flood.

We have carried out a full review of more than 116,000 gullies in the city and have put together a programme of works to be completed by winter 2019. Every gully in the city will be inspected and cleaned, with follow-up repairs made if needed. We will also monitor the build-up of silt following the first of two proposed cleanses. This will enable us to gather information on the gullies that are more likely to fill with silt and debris quickly and potentially cause flooding. We can then prioritise these locations for future planned maintenance.
