Work has started on the next phase of the Deansgate Streets for All scheme.
Interim measures are already in place between Blackfriars and Bridge Street. This new phase between Bridge Street and Quay Street introduces permanent one-way southbound travel only for all traffic, with the northbound carriageway closed. We have also introduced a 2-way contraflow cycle lane between Bridge Street and Quay Street, which links up with the cycle lanes already installed between Bridge Street and Blackfriars.
To implement the new cycle route, we are using 750mm weighted, difficult to move traffic cones for segregation, and rhino barriers to create a safe and accessible route for pedestrians at the junctions.
Due to the presence of third-party developers in the area (particularly for the Whitworth Street West, St Michaels and the Island developments), we are not yet installing permanent features, such as barriers and bollards. These developers have plans to install a new high-voltage electricity supply to the development. This will mean them undertaking works along Deansgate/Bridge St and St Mary's Parsonage. We are currently working with all 3 developers to encourage them to complete the work collaboratively and for them to all use the same trenches, which would mean less disruption for everyone in the area.
Once the work to install the high voltage electricity supply is complete, we will then move to the installation of more permanent segregation measures.
The plans for temporary infrastructure are:
- Two-way contraflow cycleway
- Temporary segregation using rhino barriers and cones until more permanent segregation measures are installed
- All traffic one-way southbound only
- A loading bay just south of Bridge Street
