COVID-19 COVID-19 business rates recovery

Recovery of unpaid business rates

The Council recognises that the past 18 months have been difficult for businesses. If you have business rates arrears, contact us as soon as possible to discuss your situation so that we can find an acceptable solution and help you avoid summons costs and recovery action.

We expect that those businesses that can afford to pay maintain their direct debits or payment plans and keep up with their payment plan that is on the bill.

However, to support businesses that may be struggling at this time, we have agreed the following actions:

  • For businesses that contact us, we may agree special payment plans so that the business rates due for 2020/21 is split into equal instalments between the current month and March 2022.
  • We urge all businesses to pay what they can and seek advice where possible from their bank or other business support.

Action by enforcement agents to recover business rates was temporarily suspended. Enforcement action to recover rates that are overdue started again on 24 August 2020.
