Green jobs and skills
Most sectors have jobs with green skills. You'll find them in construction, transport, agriculture, energy and engineering. As well as digital, financial and professional services.
The number of green jobs is set to grow. So, now is a good time to be thinking about the future.
What are green jobs and skills?
Green jobs and skills help us to live in a more sustainable way. Jobs in the green sector often relate to new tech and new ways of doing things. Think electric vehicles (EVs), energy-efficient buildings, renewable energy and green nature-rich streets.
It can be work that helps us to meet national and global environmental targets. Such as the Government's net zero aim to lower carbon emissions and tackle climate change. In Manchester, we have a goal to be zero carbon by 2038.
Green jobs and skills can also mean wider work to improve sustainability. Such as water and nature conservation and reducing flood and heat risk.
There's a huge variety of jobs – from electricians to scientists. Roles tend to focus on new tech and sustainable design. Such as:
- low-carbon travel
- clean energy generation and use
- energy efficiency
- climate-resilient buildings and urban design
- protecting nature and boosting biodiversity
Research and development of new 'green' tech is a growing sector. It can include things like finding ways to use less plastic in manufacturing. Or new ways to build, insulate and power buildings.
This new green tech means more jobs will need green skills. Such as car mechanics able to work on EVs. Heating engineers who can install heat pumps. And architects and engineers who can design low-carbon buildings, parks and streets.
