Parks, leisure and the arts Allotment holder responsibilities

Your tenancy agreement

To start your allotment tenancy you must read, complete and sign a Tenancy Agreement (Green Book) - this a formal legal contract between you and the Council.

You will be provided with a copy of our current rules before signing your Agreement - you must agree to stay within them

Once we have a signed copy of your Agreement, we will send you an invoice and arrange for you to collect a key to the site.

Your main responsibilities are to:

  • pay your annual invoice within 40 days of getting it
  • cultivate at least 25% of the plot within the first three months, and the whole plot within one year
  • maintain the boundaries and pathways surrounding your plot
  • keep the plot free of weeds and free from rubbish and unused items
  • store any items that are brought onto the allotment neatly
  • apply for permission before adding a shed, greenhouse, polytunnel or planting fruit trees
  • apply for permission to keep hens or bees on the allotment and follow our guidelines on keeping them
  • respect others and behave appropriately on our sites.

Until you let us know that you no longer want to use the plot, you will be liable for all rents and charges.

We will carry out regular inspections. Find out more about this and the enforcement process
