Background
In February 2024, we reviewed the Parsonage Safer Streets trial. We decided to remove most traffic filters. They decreased traffic in the northwest but increased it in the southeast. We also listened to feedback from residents.
What we’ve kept
To prioritise people over cars and reduce cut-through traffic, we’ve kept two effective filters:
- Parsonage Road / Wilmslow Road
- Burlington Road / Heaton Road
We continued monitoring traffic in these areas, and asked people to let us know how they felt about the filters.
Feedback from the Community
During the second trial, we collected feedback through a web form and email. Most people wanted to keep the two filters. We received some objections, and considered them, along with more data and resident feedback.
As a result, we have decided to permanently keep these two filters.
Survey Results
The trial survey ran for six months and gathered hundreds of responses. Local councillors support keeping the filters based on this feedback.
Future Plans
We are urgently seeking funding for additional traffic calming measures, such as:
- Raised tables at junctions
- Speed cushions
Once we secure funding, we will talk to the community about the best locations for these improvements.
The original budget only covered the trial phase. We now seek funding to replace the temporary planters with permanent options, like concrete planters. The current planters will stay in place until we secure this funding.
We will keep residents informed of any funding developments. In the meantime, please use parsonage@manchester.gov.uk to send us any comments or questions.
