People and communities Newly arrived migrant communities

Manchester is a city known for its diversity, welcoming nature, and strong sense of community. People from all backgrounds, cultures, faiths, and walks of life, live and work here, making it one of the most vibrant places in the UK.

With its strength coming from the many communities who have made it their home over generations. From early industrial growth to today’s vibrant neighbourhoods, people from across the world have helped shape the city’s culture, economy, and identity.

These communities are not just part of Manchester’s history—they are part of its present and future. Whether you’ve arrived recently or have lived here all your life, you’re part of the Manchester family. Everyone is welcome, and everyone belongs.

Manchester is a proud and diverse city

Here’s what makes our city special:

  • Manchester is now one of the most diverse cities in the UK.
  • Over 43% of people in Manchester are from ethnic minority backgrounds (Census, 2021)
  • More than 90 different ethnic groups live in the city

This rich mix of cultures makes Manchester a strong, vibrant, and welcoming place.

What’s the goal?

The plan aims to make sure everyone can be part of Manchester’s success. This includes:

  • Adults
  • Children and young people
  • Newly arrived migrant communities
  • People seeking sanctuary
  • Refugees

We want everyone to help shape Manchester’s future — and feel proud to belong here.
