Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of employers, which lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are available to employers of all sizes and from all sectors and cover a wide range of occupations; they are a proven way to train your workforce and make your organisation more productive and competitive.
Benefits of apprenticeships
Research among businesses employing apprentices showed that:
- 92% believe that apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce
- 80% feel that apprenticeships reduce staff turnover
- 77% think apprenticeships make them more competitive
- 76% say that apprentices provide higher overall productivity
Please visit the Greater Manchester Apprenticeship Hub for all the information you need to employ an apprentice or offer an apprenticeship to an existing member of staff.
If you do not have the capacity to employ full time apprentices then you could consider a shared apprenticeship through Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce.
If you are thinking about taking on an apprentice but are not sure what skills you need to support your growth plans then Apprenticeship Growth Service can help you put together a workforce development plan and find the right courses, training providers and where applicable grant funding. Visit the Business Growth Hub web site or call 0161 359 3050.

Good news - We have been awarded a budget to work with Manchester Small and Medium Enterprises (SME's) to increase the number of apprenticeship opportunities created across the City and where appropriate a grant of £3,000 can be awarded to assist with some of the associated costs of creating a new apprenticeship opportunity. We are keen to work with Manchester SME’s to support their growth and to enable residents to obtain skills and attributes that employers require. We also look to support employer investment in their current and future workforce by supporting apprenticeships.
To qualify for the grant you must:
- Be a Manchester based employer or business
- Be an SME who doesn’t pay apprenticeship levy
- Create a new apprenticeship opportunity within your organisation
- Not have had an apprentice in your organisation in the last two years.
- Pay the national minimum wage (age appropriate)
We can only offer one grant per employer, regardless of the number of opportunities you create.
If you meet the requirements and are interested in creating an apprentice opportunity, you can submit an enquiry and we’ll get back to you.
