Manchester Leaders Forum News

The Manchester Leaders Forum met for the third time on the 3rd of March at the newly refurbished Whitworth Art Gallery in Moss Side.

Maria Balshaw - Director of the Whitworth introduced the session with a welcome to the new gallery accompanied by an overview of the increasingly important role of culture in the economic and social regeneration of the city.

Maria talked about the inclusive nature of the arts in Manchester and praised the city’s ongoing commitment to culture, despite the difficult funding environment and pressures on public service budgets in recent years.

As part of Maria’s presentation, she played a short clip to illustrate how the £15m refurbishment came about and the important future role the gallery will play in the lives of Manchester residents.

The Leader of the City, Sir Richard Leese, chaired a debate about the devolution of GM’s £6bn budget for Health and Social Care in the second half of the session. Sir Richard talked fellow forum members through the memorandum of understanding signed between GM CCGs, AGMA and NHS England in relation to the ground-breaking deal.

Finally, the Forum heard from Jessica Bowles, Head of Policy, Partnerships and Research, on the Vision for Manchester’s new City Strategy - a document to be owned and developed by the Leaders Forum – representing a range of key institutions across the city.

The next gathering of the Leaders Forum is due to take place in summer 2015.
