Manchester Council Leader Bev Craig pays tribute to MOBO founder and trailblazer Kanya King CBE and her decades-long work championing black artists and bringing black music and culture to the mainstream here in the UK, following the announcement today of her passing.
Cllr Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said:
"Kanya King CBE was a true trailblazer in her decades-long work championing black artists and bringing black music and culture to the mainstream here in the UK. We are sad to hear of her passing after a courageous battle with cancer and pay tribute to her and the incredible legacy she leaves behind.
"We were honoured to have been asked by Kanya to host this year's landmark 30th anniversary of the MOBO Awards here in Manchester at Co-op Live. In the run-up to the astonishing show back in March, Kanya's determination, energy, enthusiasm, excitement, and her inclusivity, were compelling and inspiring.
"We're determined to keep her legacy alive moving forwards, and to support and champion black music and culture here in Manchester."
