Manchester’s world-famous Christmas Market have been nominated as one of the best festive attractions across the continent – and you can vote to take it to the top.
The influential European Best Destination website has been running the annual vote for several years, but last year Manchester was the only UK city to make the top 20 list.
This year Manchester’s Christmas Market hopes to make inroads on the influential competition and take on the might of renowned festive destinations such as Dresden, Strasbourg, Vienna, and Tallinn.
Voting opens today (Friday 1 December) and the competition runs for 10 days (closing Monday 11 December), with millions of people from across the continent expected to cast their vote.
And here’s a taste of the feedback from this year’s Christmas Markets:
“Amazing place to try food from around the world. Great place to meet new people. Good German beer and traditional wurst. Bustling place but still not too crowded. Earlier in the day is good for kids in a pram too.”
“In town from the US for a Manchester United game and had a great time. The food was great, the drinks even better and a great atmosphere for all. Great place to shop with a lot of options. Loved the way it spread out from the centre into different neighbourhoods and connected visitors with conventional shopping.”
“The best one I've been to in years. Great variety of stalls selling trinkets, gifts, handbags, purses, numerous food stalls, both takeaway and cookies, cheeses etc. Set aside a few hours to see everything. Great!”
“Coming from Germany I’m used to very traditional markets. The Manchester Christmas market is very international with standards from various counties such as Germany, France and even Turkey! Well worth a visit.”
Cllr Pat Karney, Manchester’s Christmas spokesperson, said: “It comes as some surprise that Manchester’s markets aren’t at the top of everybody’s list of festive attractions. We know that our markets are the best in the world, but now we need you to give us the thumbs up as well. Vote in your thousands and take us to the top.”
Cllr Luthfur Rahman, Manchester City Council’s executive member for school, culture and leisure, said: “Christmas Markets are hugely popular across Europe and they are at the centre of our celebrations every year. We are often told that our markets are as good, if not better, than those on the continent – so if you think the same, make sure you give us your vote.”
