Manchester welcomes new Lord Mayor

Councillor June Hitchen has taken up the chains of office as the new Lord Mayor of Manchester.

The honour marks another achievement for Councillor Hitchen, who has been a local Councillor representing the Miles Platting and Newton Heath ward for the last 16 years.

Councillor Hitchen was born and raised in Manchester.

June has been employed in a wide variety of jobs throughout her working life, including working as a factory machinist, a market trader at Newton Heath Market, an office worker, and a micro-electronic control engineer.

Councillor Hitchen has sat on various council committees, including finance, health and fire authority and one of her proudest achievements in local government is having the honour of becoming the first female Chair of Licensing for Manchester. In this role she led Manchester’s councillors in complex decision making involved in licensing premises for the sale of alcohol and provision of entertainment - an important responsibility in the vibrant modern city of Manchester.

June has a wide range of interests and enjoys drawing and painting. She has a diverse taste in music and enjoys attending concerts and the theatre. Her favourite movie genre is sci-fi and one day she hopes to visit Houston Space Centre.

During her year of office, June hopes to inspire others to raise their aspirations and reach their full potential.

Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor June Hitchen, said: “It’s been a privilege to represent the residents of Miles Platting and Newton Heath for the last 16 years and I’m honoured to now serve the entire city as Lord Mayor.

“I am so proud of Manchester, our great city, and as its first citizen I look forward to engaging and connecting with people from all of its diverse communities as well with as visitors from around the globe.”

June has two grown-up children and one grandchild. Her grandson is the latest of many generations to be born and raised in Manchester.

Fellow Councillor, Carmine Grimshaw will support June as her Consort during her term.
