Apply now for your child's high school place

Parents who have children due to start secondary school next September are being urged to think now about which schools they're interested in for their child.

Time is running out for them to apply for their child's place and all applications must be made by the strict deadline of 5 pm on Thursday 31 October.

All families with children currently in their last year at primary school need to apply for a secondary school place by this deadline.

Parents who are undecided which school would be right for their child should take advantage of the many open evenings and days that schools across the city are holding.

If they can't get along to the sessions they should check out school websites, or contact schools directly to answer any questions they might have so they can make an informed choice about which schools they think would be right for their child.

Parents are encouraged to list at least three school preferences on their application and also to rank their choices. This is important because if places are available at each of the schools named by the parent, an offer will be made for the school they rank highest.

The easiest way to apply is on-line and parents should have already received a letter with a unique identifying number for their child to speed up the on-line process.

Any parent who hasn’t received this can still apply on-line, it just takes a few minutes longer.

It is most important however that parents get their application in on time and don’t miss the deadline.

Parents who apply late after the deadline has passed will have less chance of getting a place for their child at one of their preferred schools.

Councillor Garry Bridges, Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for Children and Schools, said: "Choosing a secondary school for your child is one of the most important decisions parents have to make.

"It's something all parents want to get right but with only a few weeks left to the deadline you need to act now and find out more about the schools you're interested in.

"Once you've decided on the schools you like it’s vital to apply on time. Applying late means much less chance of getting a place at one of your preferred schools.

"More secondary schools than ever in the city are classed as good or outstanding by Ofsted meaning there has never been a better chance to choose a Manchester school.  So - do your homework, check out the schools you're interested in, and don’t miss the deadline."
