Abraham Moss Library and Leisure Centre hits a trio of construction milestones

Work is well underway as the construction of the new Abraham Moss Library and Leisure Centre takes shape in North Manchester.

The Laing O’Rourke team constructing the Abraham Moss Library and Leisure Centre has reached three major milestones, with the completion of the substructure works, commencement of the steelworks and the installation of the first precast elements.

The progress means that Crumpsall residents will begin to the see their new library and leisure centre take shape, with the installation of the 330 tonnes of structural steel which will form the skeleton of Abraham Moss Library and Leisure Centre. Through collaboration with local steel specialists, Shawton Engineering, the steelworks are planned to complete in summer, ready for the team to move onto ensuring the building is watertight.

Abraham Moss Library and Leisure Centre is part of an ongoing sport and leisure investment strategy. The new centre will have a sports hall, two squash courts, gym and dance studio, along with a modern library. The facility will also have a six-lane swimming pool, learner pool, steam room and sauna.

Councillor John Hacking, Executive Member for Skills Employment and Leisure said:

"It is always exciting to see the physical evidence of a new building taking shape. Our investment into this fantastic new facility in north Manchester will bring Abraham Moss in line with the rest of the city's leisure centres and libraries and will be a real asset to the community. It will ensure that all our residents have access to modern facilities and the highest quality leisure facilities to help them get active with all the benefits to physical and mental health that this brings."

George Holgate, Project Leader at Laing O’Rourke, said:

"The team is proud of the progress we have made at Abraham Moss Library and Leisure Centre so far.

"It is great to see all the hard work and planning starting to show as the facility starts to take shape. The team is ready and excited to be entering this exciting period of construction."

Laing O’Rourke was appointed to the project in June 2021.
