Cleaning and Waste Management

  1. Introduction

Manchester Markets supports waste reduction, reuse and recycling.

All tenants and traders must comply with current waste legislation, including the Government's Simpler Recycling requirements, and follow market waste arrangements to help maintain a clean, safe and sustainable trading environment.

  2. Standards information

    1. Keeping market areas clean

You are responsible for using market facilities properly and keeping your trading and storage areas, and the surrounding area, clean and tidy.

    You must:

    • Clear up any spillages or waste immediately.
    • Report any neglected spillages or discarded waste to the market management team.
    • Keep your allocated space free from waste at all times.

    2. Waste disposal and recycling

You must dispose of waste legally and responsibly and recycle wherever possible.

All waste must be managed in line with current legislation, including the Government's Simpler Recycling requirements . Waste must be separated into:

    • Dry mixed recycling (paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass).
    • Food waste.
    • Residual (non-recyclable) waste.

Wholesale Market tenants must arrange and manage their own waste and recycling collections. You must comply with all legal requirements and keep waste transfer notes and other required records for inspection.

Longsight and Gorton Market traders may use market waste facilities where provided and in line with site instructions. These facilities must only be used for waste generated through trading activities within the market, including customer food waste and unsold food intended for consumption on site.

Animal by-products, including raw meat waste, fish waste, offal, trimmings and other processing waste, must be removed and disposed of through an appropriately licensed contractor.

Where market facilities are provided, use the correct container:

    • Paper, flattened cardboard, plastic bottles, cans and cartons: blue or grey recycling bin.
    • Food waste: designated food waste bin.
    • Residual trade waste: black or grey waste bin.
    • Glass bottles and jars: glass recycling bin.

If market waste facilities are not available, you must make your own arrangements for waste collection and disposal.

You are responsible for ensuring that anyone working on your behalf complies with these requirements.

    3. You must not

    • Bring waste into the market for disposal or abandonment.
    • Put trade waste in public litter bins.
    • Use market waste facilities to dispose of fixtures, fittings, equipment, furniture, unsold stock, animal or fish waste, fats, oils, grease or other specialist waste.
    • Contaminate recycling or food waste containers with incorrect materials.

    4. End of trading

At the end of trading hours, you must remove all goods, equipment and unsold items from your trading and storage areas.

This does not apply to Wholesale Market units, indoor market units, lockable units or designated storerooms.

    5. Food and drink traders

Food and drink traders must comply with all legal requirements for the storage, preparation, sale and disposal of food and drink. For information on food safety and hygiene requirements, visit the Food Standards Agency website at Running a food business: Your responsibilities - GOV.UK

    You must:

    • Store food in suitable pest-proof containers.
    • Keep food waste separate from other waste streams.
    • Only use designated food waste bins where provided.
    • Not place food waste in recycling or residual waste bins.
    • Not dispose of food waste through drains or surface water systems.
    • Arrange licensed collection of animal and fish waste, fats, oils, grease and other specialist waste.
    • Keep any waste records required by law and make them available for inspection on request.

    6. Sanitary waste

Sanitary bins must only be used for nappies and sanitary waste.

Do not dispose of nappies or sanitary waste in any other waste facility. Only toilet tissue should be flushed down toilets.

    7. Pest control

You must ensure your activities do not adversely affect other tenants, traders or market users, including by creating pest or vermin problems.

Pest control is provided for communal market areas only. Report pest or vermin issues in these areas to the market management team.

To help prevent pests and vermin in your own areas, you should:

    • Maintain good housekeeping standards.
    • Store food in suitable pest-proof containers.
    • Arrange and pay for pest control where necessary.

    8. Unattended goods

Any goods left unattended are left at the owner's risk.
