Manchester City Council

Fallowfield

  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Place and Infrastructure

    • We will support and involve residents in the Platt Fields Park Nature Neighbourhoods Plan. This work will help create green corridor routes across the area. We will support community gardens, such as the Gem Garden on Bethnall Drive. We will also help deliver creative nature art trails and tree planting to improve local green spaces.
    • We will work with local schools to support School Streets. We aim to deliver three Play Streets each school year. This work will help increase walking and cycling. We will also support Eco‑Schools activity. Schools will include St Kentigerns and Wilbraham Primary School.
    • We will work with Manchester Student Homes and SOS UK on the Student Energy Action for Life project. This project will give clear advice on energy saving to students and landlords. We will deliver three Action Days focused on energy efficiency.

    Green and Circular Economy

    • We will help keep the Fallowfield Triangle clean and tidy. We will work with Council teams and community partners. Together, we will educate businesses and residents about recycling. We will deliver three Action Days to support this work.
    • Work with Manchester Student Homes, the University of Manchester, and Manchester Metropolitan University. Together, we will manage waste during student move‑out periods. We will set up donation points to reduce waste going to landfill. This work will aim to improve recycling, reduce contamination, and help students recycle correctly. We will deliver two Action Days.
    • Support and promote local Grow Your Own projects. This will help people learn about lower‑carbon food and meals. We will work with Platt Fields Market Garden, Farmers Market, and Manchester Urban Diggers. We will look at composting and waste in local food growing. We will encourage residents and market traders to use compost from Platt Fields Market Garden. We will also make sure the Our Manchester Food Grant supports at least one local growing and cooking project.

    People and Communities

    • Help increase learning and training opportunities in food growing and nature. We aim to secure a certified community grower course for Manchester Urban Diggers. We will work with Platt Fields Market Garden to involve young people and build skills that support community resilience.
    • We will use the Fallowfield, Withington, and Old Moat Eco‑Schools film at local events and online. The film shares messages from local young people. It will help encourage behaviour change to reduce climate impact.
    • We will work with older residents to promote walking routes in Fallowfield. This will include the Age Friendly Bench Route between The Place at Fallowfield Library and Platt Fields Park. The route will support safe, social, and healthy walking.
