Ward-specific objectives
Climate Change activities in the Piccadilly ward are managed jointly with the Deansgate ward.
Place and Infrastructure
- Improve unloved green spaces around Baird Street and the Northern Quarter. We will do this by supporting local community groups and encouraging volunteer days. This will include planting projects with a focus on nature and biodiversity.
- We will work with MCR Active to test a new approach to Active Streets in the city centre. This will help bring public spaces to life. At these events, we aim to speak to at least 30 people about climate change and how small actions can help.
- Support the plans to redevelop Piccadilly Gardens. These plans include more trees, planting, and floral displays. The changes will improve the look and feel of the space and make it more welcoming for everyone.
- Host at least one Clean Air Day activity in the ward. The event will promote walking and cycling. It will also encourage drivers to switch off engines to help improve air quality.
Green and Circular Economy
- Support local community groups to hold Great British Spring Clean events. We will also work with Keep Manchester Tidy to deliver a flagship clean‑up in the city centre. We aim to hold two events in the ward as part of the Great British Spring Clean in 2027.
- Work with managing agents and the Waste and Recycling Team to expand the Christmas tree recycling scheme. We aim to add one extra collection point in the ward. We will also work with council teams to reuse wood chippings in the city centre.
- We will work with CityCo and Arup to explore options for a waste consolidation scheme in the Northern Quarter. This work will build on learning from pilot projects in other parts of the city centre. The aim is to reduce waste, vehicle movements, and street clutter.
People and Communities
- Support at least 100 hours of corporate volunteering across the year. This volunteering will lead to clear environmental improvements and help create a cleaner and greener city.
- Work with managing agents and the National Trust Sky Gardening challenge. This will encourage balcony greening and small‑scale planting projects. We will also help community groups find and apply for funding to support this work.
- Support the Friends of Sackville Gardens group. We will help them develop their plans to improve the Gardens and make the space better for people and nature.
