  5. Description

    Support available through Confident Steps

Confident Steps is a Work Club that helps people move closer to work.
It builds confidence, practical skills, and employability.

The programme combines English, digital, and work skills, with well‑being support built in.

Participants usually receive around five hours of support each week.
    This includes:

    • small group sessions
    • one‑to‑one coaching
    • a personal learning plan based on needs and goals

    English skills

English sessions help people use English in everyday and work settings.

    Support includes:

    • sessions led by qualified ESOL teachers
    • a focus on Pre‑Entry and Entry 1 levels
    • informal learning that builds confidence
    • clear routes into further or formal learning

Some learners can work towards an Ascentis accredited qualification, where appropriate.

    Digital skills

Digital skills sessions help people feel confident using basic online tools.

    Participants learn how to:

    • use email and the internet
    • access learning through Learn My Way
    • join online meetings using Zoom
    • search and apply for jobs online
    • practise online interviews
    • manage everyday tasks, such as:
      • contacting Jobcentre Plus
      • booking or planning appointments

    Work skills and well‑being support

Work skills sessions focus on preparing for employment in a supportive way.

    Participants receive personalised help with:

    • writing or improving a CV
    • searching for jobs
    • understanding workplace culture
    • learning skills for specific job sectors

Well‑being support is part of all sessions.
This helps participants feel more relaxed and prepared.

    Support includes:

    • interview tips and common mistakes to avoid
    • guidance on what employers expect at work
    • simple ways to manage nerves and anxiety

    Enhanced outreach

We offer enhanced outreach to help more people access the Work Club.

    This helps us:

    • connect with communities across the city
    • reduce barriers to taking part
    • support people who may not engage with services easily

Who the Work Club is for

Confident Steps is designed for people who face barriers to work.

    We focus on supporting:

    • people from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds
    • first‑generation migrants, refugees, and new arrivals
    • people who are unemployed and claiming benefits

Many participants may also be experiencing:

    • limited English skills
    • low confidence
    • mental health challenges
    • the impact of trauma or the cost‑of‑living crisis

These barriers can increase the risk of long‑term unemployment or exploitation.
Our approach is personal, intensive, and holistic, offering practical help and ongoing support.
