Manchester City Council

Roads and transport Rackhouse Road and Wythenshawe Road Crossing Improvement

We are making it safer and easier to walk and cycle around Rackhouse Road and Wythenshawe Road.

Work will start from 19 October 2026 and is due to finish by the end of March 2027.

Work will take place at three locations. There will be temporary traffic controls while the work takes place.

What we are changing

We will:

  • improve crossings for people walking and cycling
  • add new crossings with traffic lights
  • improve some footpaths and cycle paths
  • add raised areas at some side roads to help slow traffic

This includes a new Sparrow crossing at Sale Road and Rackhouse Road. A Sparrow crossing has traffic lights and separate spaces for people walking and cycling to cross the road.

The improvements will make it safer and easier to travel between local neighbourhoods and Wythenshawe Park.

Where and when the work will take place

  • add a new crossing with traffic lights for people walking and cycling

  • create a new walking route to the relocated bus stop

About the plans

Earlier in 2026, we asked local people what they thought about our plans.

Thank you to everyone who took part. The plans had support from the local community and have now been approved.
