Wilmslow Road Junction Improvements
The work to improve the junction of Wilmslow Road, Ladybarn Road and Sherwood Street began on 18 May 2026 and we’re making great progress.
This work is being done to make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to navigate it safely, as part of wider Manchester Cycleway project.
This is being undertaken on behalf of Manchester City Council by our appointed contractor, Rosgal PLC.
We’re expecting this work to last until 25 January 2027.

The improvements include:
Prohibition of Driving (except for cyclists) on Sherwood Street, between Wilmslow Road and Bowland Drive, and the provision of a two-way cycle lane along this stretch of Sherwood Street. This section of Sherwood Street currently has a cycle lane (eastbound only) and is one way westbound from Wilmslow Road for other vehicles
Changes to the junction layout. The changes will allow cycles and pedestrians to cross separately away from each other, and from traffic
Changes to the Ladybarn Road arm of the junction, reducing the width of the carriageway, relocating the loading bay slightly to the south, and adding a two-way cycle lane north of the main carriageway, which connects Wilmslow Road with the existing two-way cycle lane to the east. This takes cyclists onto the Fallowfield Loop
Changing the existing ‘No Waiting at Any Time’ and ‘No Loading at Any Time’ restrictions along Wilmslow Road and Ladybarn Road to suit the new junction layout/kerb lines/islands etc.
Three new controlled crossing points
Rumble strips to slow down the cyclists as they approach the pedestrian crossings over the cycle track
Zebra crossings over the pedestrian crossings, laid over the cycle track

Working phases and patterns
The work will be completed in 4 Phases. Phases 1 and 2 are ahead of schedule and Phase 3 works are anticipated to begin on 29 June. You will see works alternating between each corner of the junction over the next few months due to logistics with re-surfacing and the installation of street furniture.
What is happening?
Work is moving ahead quickly, and we are now starting the road resurfacing stage.
Sunday 6 September
Removing the existing road surface
- Sherwood Street and Boland Drive: Work expected to start at 1pm
- Wilmslow Road and Ladybarn Road: Work expected to start at 5pm during a road closure
Laying the new binder layer (the layer beneath the final road surface)
- Sherwood Street and Boland Drive: Work expected to start at 11pm during a road closure
- Wilmslow Road and Ladybarn Road: Work expected to start at 11pm during a road closure
Sunday 13 September
Laying the final road surface
- Sherwood Street and Boland Drive: Work expected to start at 2pm
- Wilmslow Road and Ladybarn Road: Work expected to start at 5pm during a road closure
Sunday 20 September
Cycle lane improvements
- Excavation work and installation of new green surfacing in the cycle lane on Sherwood Street
- Work expected to start at 5pm during the existing road closure
Road Closures
We will carry out as much work as possible during the day. However, some of the work can only be completed safely when the roads are closed.
On the dates listed above, roads will be closed between 5pm and 3am. They will reopen outside of these hours.
Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place, and access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
