Homes and property How to rent guide

Do you know your responsibilities?

Private landlords must provide new tenants with the how to rent guide, which is issued by the government.

This is required as part of  “The Assured Shorthold Tenancy Notices and Prescribed Requirements (England) Regulations 2015”,

The guide helps tenants understand their rights and responsibilities when finding a home in the private rented sector. It provides a checklist and more detailed information about each stage of the process, including:

  • what to look out for before renting
  • living in a rented home
  • what happens at the end of a tenancy
  • what to do if things go wrong.

Failure to provide the guide may impact on landlords serving a section 21 notice, when trying to get possession of the property at a later date.
