Lord Mayor goes the distance
10 May 2011
Sunday 15 May will see the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Mark Hackett, lace up his trainers for the Great Manchester Run in aid of the Lord Mayor’s Charity and Touraid.
The Lord Mayor will join 38,000 other participants for the 10K run across Manchester City center.
Pounding the pavement with the Lord Mayor of Manchester will be the Mayor of Bolton, Councillor John Byrne, who is running in aid of the Alzheimer's Society.
The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Mark Hackett said, "The run not only provides an excellent opportunity to raise money for charity but also gives me the chance to encourage people in Manchester to take that extra step forward.
"The run will be difficult but it's the challenge that appeals to me. It's not about achieving the fastest time but promoting the benefits of sport for people of all abilities. Taking part in sport not only improves your health but also helps social networking, creates friendships and can improve your sense of general well-being.
"I am hoping that by taking part in the Great Manchester run I can inspire others to take up their own challenges and push themselves beyond their normal limits."
The Lord Mayor of Manchester's Charity Appeal Trust helps to alleviate the effects of poverty within the city. One of the highest profile activities of the trust is the financial support it provides to many under-privileged families enabling them to enjoy a modest but desperately needed holiday.
Touraid is a UK based charity who offer support to UK schools and clubs wishing to host activity based tours for disadvantaged children from overseas and is organising a Manchester Touraid festival in the last week of June.
