Manchester Hosts 9th Mind Sports Olympiad

Once again, Manchester will host to the Mind Sports Olympiad. The event will take place at the Manchester Conference Centre at the University of Manchester between 19th and 29th August, 2005.

The Mind Sports Olympiad is a festival of more than 40 different thinking games such as Chess, Bridge, Backgammon, Scrabble, Cribbage, Poker (without money) and Dominoes; as well as several mental skills tournaments including Creative Thinking.

This is the ninth such event and the third successive year that the Mind Sports Olympiad has taken place in Manchester, reflecting the city's rich heritage and global recognition as a place where dynamic thinking has delivered world-class innovation and invention.

Councillor Mark Hackett, Manchester City Council Executive Member for Culture and Leisure says: "Without doubt, Manchester is both the Knowledge Capital and the Cultural hub of the north-west, and so it is particularly fitting that this prestigious international event is being held in the city".

There will be strong local interest and participation throughout the eleven days of competition, led by members of Manchester Chess and Bridge Club, which is based in Withington. Club Chairman, Jeff Morris, says "Mind Sports are the perfect way to exercise the brain cells in a friendly and social environment".
