Arcadia Library and Leisure Centre celebrates first birthday with big bash

Levenshulme’s Arcadia Library and Leisure Centre is celebrating its first birthday with a free fun-filled afternoon of crafts, games and exercise for people of all ages.

The event takes place on Saturday 18 February (12 - 4pm).

Fitness activities on offer in the leisure centre will include the Cross Fit Challenge, Bhangra Fit and the opportunity to try out circus skills.

At the library, residents can get creative with Manchester artist Miriam Wild, play bingo, make badges, or have their face painted - and much more.

Visitors will also be able to try out an exercise bike, or have their photos taken in front of a green screen, allowing them to pose as ‘Olympic champions’ in a range of sports.

The centre’s over-50's group will be raising money for charity by selling refreshments, plus a tombola.

The combined library and leisure centre boasts 25m and 17m swimming pools, as well as a 60-station gym. It also features a sauna and steam room, plus a dedicated community studio.

The library offers free wifi and a suite of PCs, plus an attractive children's library, comfortable seating areas and study spaces with a wide range of books for all ages.

The centre is open from 6.30am - 10pm on weekdays and 9am-5pm at weekends.

The 2016 Public Library Users Survey showed that 93% of customers judged the interior and exterior attractiveness of the Arcadia Centre to be good or very good. With 112,000 visitors in 2016, Arcadia Library is now the fifth busiest library in Manchester and issued just under 40,000 books and renewals last year, with children's books proving particularly popular.

Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, Councillor Luthfur Rahman, said: “This free event brings together people of all ages to celebrate the success of the Arcadia Library and Leisure Centre, with a fantastic selection of creative and leisure activities to try out on the day.  Arcadia is proving to be incredibly popular with residents and now plays a central role in Levenshulme life.”

Andy King, Regional Director for GLL, who operate the centre under the Better brand on behalf of Manchester City Council, said, “What an amazing first year it’s been for Arcadia. It truly is a centre at the heart of the community and has been so tremendously well supported by the residents of Levenshulme.

“As a charitable not-for-profit Social Enterprise, we aim to get more people more active, more often and the team at Arcadia, both in the leisure centre and the library, can be proud to have contributed in making this year so successful and helping achieve our aim. The whole team at Arcadia hope everybody has a great day on Saturday marking the occasion.”

Activities for children and families will be on offer, but please note that all children under the age of eight must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
