About ancient monuments

An ancient monument can be any site considered to be of national archaeological importance and is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Nationally, there are around 19,000 entries in the schedule, covering 35,000 sites ranging from standing stones, Roman forts, burial mounds and more recent structures such as collieries and wartime pill-boxes.

  • Remains of eastern wall of Roman fort, Collier Street, Castlefield
  • Baguley Hall, Hall Lane, Baguley (also a Grade I Listed Building)
  • Hanging Bridge, Cateaton Street, Cathedral area
  • Moated site of Peel Hall, Peel Hall Road, Sharston
  • Moated site of Clayton Hall, Ashton New Road
  • Nico Ditch, Wilmslow Road, Fallowfield
