Counterfeit vodka warning to off licences
Published Friday 11th March 05
Three off licences are facing prosecution after Trading Standards officers seized more than 30 bottles of potentially dangerous counterfeit 'Tamova' vodka.
Analysis of the counterfeit vodka established that it is unfit for human consumption. It was found to contain tertiary butyl, industrial alcohol which could have a toxic effect if consumed and even lead to blindness.
The three stores - in Fallowfield, Ardwick and Withington - now face prosecution and fines of up to £5,000 per illegal bottle.
Councillor Neil Swanwick, Executive Member for Planning and the Environment, said: "This is a warning to all off licences that they should only be purchasing stock from legitimate sources. Those that are buying items illegally from 'white van'operations are not only flouting the law, but also putting their customers' health at severe risk.
"Trading standards have been staking out a number of white van sales operations and our message to them, and any unscrupulous off licences, is that they will be caught and brought to justice."
Genuine Tamova vodka is only found in Aldi Stores nationwide and it should be stressed that this is not the problem vodka.
Trading Standards are continuing their investigations into the source of the counterfeit vodka and will be writing to all off-licences warning them about the potential dangers.
Anyone who finds the counterfeit Tamova should contact Trading Standards on 0161 2341555.
