What we are proposing
We want to make speed limits across Wythenshawe clearer and more consistent.
This means:
- changing more roads from 30mph to 20mph
- bringing Wythenshawe in line with other parts of Manchester
Around:
- 68% of all roads in Manchester are already 20mph
- 74% of residential roads are 20mph
You are likely to already use 20mph roads in your daily journeys.
Why we want to make this change
Our main aim is to improve safety for everyone who uses the road.
Each year:
- around 1,000 people are killed or seriously injured on roads across Greater Manchester
Lower speeds help reduce harm.
What the evidence shows
- A person is 5 times more likely to die if hit at 30mph than at 20mph [Source: The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents]
- 20mph roads help keep drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users safer [Source: UK Parliament Post]
- Driving at 20mph can mean less speeding up and braking, which can reduce emissions [Source: London Assembly]
- Journey times are unlikely to change when driving at 20mph instead of 30mph [Source: Transport for London]

Journey times
Many people are concerned that lower speed limits could increase journey times.
Research shows that delays in Manchester are mainly caused by congestion at junctions, rather than the speed people drive between them. This is a common issue in towns and cities across the UK.
For example, London found that introducing 20mph speed limits did not have a noticeable impact on overall journey times.
Lower speed limits can also help reduce the number and severity of road traffic collisions. Fewer incidents can mean fewer unplanned delays and more reliable journeys.
We do not expect the proposed speed limit changes in Wythenshawe to have a noticeable impact on journey times.
Some key routes through Wythenshawe will remain at 30mph, including certain arterial roads.

Many areas of Manchester already have 20mph limits, especially near the city centre.

- improve safety
- create a more consistent road network

Your feedback to this consultation will help us to understand residents views on these proposals, however there will also be an opportunity to officially comment on the proposals during the Traffic Restriction Order process between 24 September and 22 October 2026.
