Everyone I live with is a full-time student
If everyone who lives in your home is a full-time student, you will usually not have to pay council tax.
Check which applies to you
If you live in student halls
Student halls of residence are automatically exempt from council tax.
You do not need to apply for an exemption.
I live in a house, flat or other private accommodation
You will usually need to apply for a council tax exemption.
Before you start your application
Make sure you have:
- your student ID number
- the name of your college or university
- your course start and end dates
- the address of the property.
Important
Your application will be assessed and an account created.
You may receive a discount or exemption based on the information you provide. We may carry out checks afterwards, either through information shared by your university or by asking you to provide a student certificate.
If we ask for further evidence, you must provide it to keep your exemption or discount.
Changes you must tell us about
After applying, you must tell us about changes. This includes if:
- someone moves into the property who is not a full-time student
- somebody leaves the property
- you stop studying full-time
- your course ends.
These changes may affect your exemption.
