Council tax Money off council tax for full-time students

I have a non-British partner or dependent

If you are a full-time student, your home may be exempt from council tax if your partner or dependant is:

  • not a British citizen; and
  • is not allowed to work or claim benefits in the UK.

Before you start your application

Make sure you have:

  • your student ID number
  • the name of your college or university
  • your course start and end dates
  • details of your partner or dependant
  • a copy of their visa
  • a copy of their passport or residence permit showing they have "no recourse to public funds".

Changes you must tell us about

After applying, you must tell us about any changes to your circumstances.

This includes if:

  • your course ends
  • you stop studying full-time
  • your partner's immigration status changes
  • your partner or dependant moves in or out of the property.

These changes may affect your exemption.

Use our contact form and choose the "I'm a student" option. Give as much information as possible about your circumstances and the people who live with you.

We may ask for further evidence before making a decision.
