My home is empty while I'm studying elsewhere
If you are a full-time student and your home is empty while you study somewhere else, you may not have to pay council tax on that property.
Before you start your application
Make sure you have:
- your student ID number
- the name of your college or university
- your course start and end dates
- the address of the empty property
- the date you moved out.
Important
You may be asked to provide evidence that:
- you are a full-time student
- you normally live somewhere else while studying
- the property is empty.
We may carry out checks before deciding whether an exemption applies.
Changes you must tell us about
After applying, you must tell us if:
- someone moves into the property
- you move back into the property
- you stop studying full-time
- your course ends.
These changes may affect your exemption.
