Apply for chimney height approval
Under the Clean Air Act 1993, we must approve the height of certain chimneys serving furnaces.
Chimney height approval is required if the furnace:
- burns pulverised fuel
- burns 45.4 kg or more per hour of other solid matter
- burns liquid or gaseous fuel at a rate equivalent to 366.4 kilowatts or more.
It is an offence to operate a furnace meeting these requirements if the chimney height has not been approved, or if any conditions of the approval have not been complied with.
Exemptions apply under the The Clean Air (Height of Chimneys) (Exemption) Regulations 1969:
- a temporary replacement boiler or plant where the plant being replaced is being inspected, maintained, repaired, rebuilt or replaced
- a temporary source of heat or power for building or construction works, investigation or research
- plant used to bring other plant to an operating temperature
- a mobile or transportable source of heat or power for agricultural operations.
If you are considering installing a furnace, you should complete an application form to Request air quality data or information.
