Piccadilly Gardens
Piccadilly Gardens is one of the busiest and most important places in Manchester city centre. Lots of people use it every day to walk through, relax or travel. Trams, buses and tens of thousands of pedestrians pass through the area, making it a key part of getting around the city.
Piccadilly Gardens is getting a fresh new look. This is the first step in a bigger plan to make the area a world-class space.
We will be making significant improvements over the next year. These improvements will help make Piccadilly Gardens more colourful, fun and safer for families, visitors and people who live nearby.
Here’s what you can expect
- Flowers and green spaces. Along with new paved areas and paths across the Gardens making it easy to walk around. There will be more trees, plants and flowers to make the Gardens look beautiful all year round.
- Feeling safer. More police officers in the area and more visible staff from a variety of agencies in Piccadilly Gardens. They will work with us to deal with any problems quickly and help everyone feel safe.
- Better CCTV and lighting. New cameras and brighter lighting will help stop crime and make the Gardens feel safer.
- Space for events. The old fountains will be removed, creating room for family-friendly events throughout the year. A new structure will help support activities like shows, celebrations and community events.
- A better playground. The children’s play area will be incorporated in the new designs. It will be high quality, like the ones at Mayfield Park and Ancoats Green, but shaped especially for Piccadilly Gardens.
- Removing the concrete planters. The raised concrete planters alongside the Queen Victoria statue will be taken out as part of the improvements. This will make the Gardens feel more open, tidy and easier to move around.
What happens next?
Hoardings to enable early works to part of the Gardens will be going up in March. We’ll then be bringing forward a planning application later in the year. We will be sharing plans ahead of this, in the summer.
