Homes and property Private landlords: Rent and Housing Benefit

Housing Benefit to help your tenant pay

Your tenant may be able to claim Housing Benefit to pay some or all of their rent.

The amount they get depends on their circumstances: how much they earn, who lives with them, what other benefits they get and so on.

Don't assume that your tenant will get Housing Benefit, or how much, until we tell you in writing.

Getting the benefit

Your tenant can choose to get the benefit paid to themselves or directly to you. If they owe more than eight weeks rent, the benefit can come to you automatically. But if you receive the payment directly, make sure the tenant is not claiming too much - you could be responsible.

Circumstances changed?

If Housing Benefit is being paid you must tell the council immediately if the tenancy changes - if the rent goes up, or you provide different services for example. Contact the Benefits Service. If the tenant's circumstances change they must tell us too.
