Bridge Street and John Dalton Street (A34) Improvements Phase 1: Second Round Consultation - You Said, We Did

What We Asked

In March 2024, we shared design ideas for the A34 Corridor—covering Bridge StreetJohn Dalton Street, and Princess Street. We asked for your thoughts on:

  • Bus stop locations
  • Pavements and crossings
  • Loading bays
  • Taxi and disabled parking

What You Told Us

You gave feedback on how the designs could be improved. Based on your comments, we made changes and ran a second consultation from 25 November 2024 to 5 January 2025. This included:

  • An online form
  • In-person and virtual events

What’s Changing

Bus Stops

  • New bus stops in laybys to keep traffic moving in both directions
  • Some stops extended to fit two buses at once
  • One stop moved to a wider area to improve traffic flow

Pedestrian Improvements

  • Wider pavements at busy junctions
  • New pedestrian-controlled crossings at key points
  • Raised crossings at junctions to slow turning traffic and make crossing safer

Loading Bays

  • New loading areas on Bridge Street and part of John Dalton Street
    • Available 6am–10am, then revert to pavement space
  • Larger bays to fit more vehicles
  • Extra loading bays on nearby side streets with longer loading hours

Taxi Services

  • Shared loading bay and taxi rank for two taxis on Bridge Street
  • New taxi rank on St James’ Square

Disabled Parking

  • Two new disabled bays on St James’ Square
  • Two more near the People’s History Museum on Left Bank

Cyclist Awareness

  • No separate cycle lanes, but cyclists can use the route
  • Large cycle symbols will be painted on Bridge Street and John Dalton Street to alert drivers

What You Said About the Changes

Most people supported the updated plans—especially:

  • More pedestrian crossings
  • Better bus stop layouts

Many felt the changes would improve the area for people walking and using public transport.

Concerns Raised

  • Some worried that narrower roads might cause traffic delays
  • Mixed views on raised crossings—some liked them, others were concerned about ramp design
  • We also worked with the Ape and Apple pub to support their delivery needs

What’s Next

We’ve reviewed all feedback and updated the designs. Next steps:

  • Finalise detailed plans
  • Appoint a contractor
  • Start the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process, which includes another formal consultation
