Parks, leisure and the arts Allotments in Manchester

Applying for an allotment

Before you apply for your first plot you should consider your health and physical ability and the time commitment you can make – an allotment can take a great deal of time, especially in the first few years and you will need to maintain your motivation.

Applying for an allotment

You can only apply for an allotment online. We will then place you on a waiting list for your chosen locations.

To apply for an allotment you will need to:

  • be aged over 18 and
  • be a resident of Manchester and
  • know the name of the allotment site you wish to apply for

If you meet this criteria you can use the directory to find an allotment site near you

Please ensure you inform us of any changes to your contact details in the interim, as you could lose your place on the waiting list.

Demand for allotments

We have recently experienced a huge surge in demand and there are over 2500 people on our lists. The length of time people wait for a plot varies with the site but they don't become free very often.

We will not provide automatic updates on your position on the waiting list in the interim.

While you wait, you could get involved with Growing Manchester instead. This is a community food growing programme that helps to support local people and food growing projects to achieve our shared ambition to grow and live sustainably.

Next steps

When your name gets to the top if the site waiting list we, or the Allotment Society, will contact you when a plot becomes available. We will use the contact details you have provided, so please ensure you inform us of any changes or you could lose your place on the list.

Once you are contacted with an offer to view an allotment, you will have 14 days to visit the site and accept the plot before we withdraw the offer.

The weekend is usually a good time to visit. It is always advisable to visit the site and see the plot before you sign the tenancy agreement so you can see exactly where it is and what condition it is in.

If no response is received, we will assume that you are no longer interested in having an allotment and will remove your details from the waiting list.
