Other permissions you might need
A market rights licence only gives permission to hold a market. You may need other permissions too. For example:
- planning permission
- needed if your market runs more than 14 days a year. Or if you build permanent structures or make big changes to the land.

- alcohol or other licences
- you may need a Temporary Events Notice (TEN) or new premises licence

- road closure approval
- a charity collections permit
- Music licences. If you play recorded music, you need licences from:
- permission to use a park
- booking a city centre outdoor space.
It’s your responsibility to check and get these permissions. Separate fees and notice periods may apply.
What you need to do if you sell food or drink
If your market sells food or drink (inside or outside), you must:
- complete a checklist form for each food and drink seller; and
- send the form to the Environmental Health Service at least 10 working days before the market.
