Another £20m into the hands of Mancunians to help reshape their communities

Moss Side has been handed a huge boost after it was announced that it would receive up to £20m in funding through the Pride in Place programme.

Today (March 20) parts of Moss Side and Whalley Range (Moss Side West)* will become the fifth Manchester neighbourhood to benefit from Pride in Place Funding.

Given £20m to spend over a 10-year period, Pride in Place aims to give control back to communities, allowing them to shape how money is spent improving the places they call home.

Already in Manchester, Clayton Vale, Gorton South, Benchill South and Harpurhey South have already been awarded PiP funding. With the addition of Moss Side West this means that an additional £100m of community funding has been committed to Manchester over the next decade.

In these areas process is already under way to establish Neighbourhood Boards which will be chaired by members of the community, ensuring that local voices will always be at the heart of decision making.

The Council welcomes the arrival of even more funding for Moss Side West, which adds to the money already invested by the Council in addressing the range of challenges faced by this neighbourhood, ranging from health inequality, deprivation and the need for more affordable housing.

This is why in recent years the Council has invested more and more in the area, from the transformation of The Reno, to providing more affordable housing for older people through the Bowes Street and Depot regeneration projects.

Through the PiP scheme, a consultation is already taking place, asking residents of the above communities what their priorities will be over the next 10 years. At the core of the PiP scheme is ensuring that local voices are heard, which is why the Council is encouraging everyone who will be affected by PiP to get in touch and have their say.

Councillor Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Securing £20m of funding for Moss Side is hugely significant news and I’m incredibly proud to be able to share it.

“Over the next 10 years this money will be spent by the people of Moss Side, for the people of Moss Side.

“In recent years we have put a significant amount of investment into Moss Side as we work to address long-standing issues like deprivation, health inequality, and providing more and better affordable housing for local people.

“But now, with this funding, it is going to be about spending money the way You – the people of Moss Side – want it to be spent. Whether that is investing in more green space, jobs and training, more opportunities for our children, or keeping our neighbourhoods clean. Your priorities will be our guide.”
