Cllr Luthfur Rahman comments on the Windrush scandal.
"Manchester is forever grateful for the contributions of the Windrush Generation to our city and our nation. These courageous men and women came to the UK and contributed not only to our post-war economic recovery but to all facets of social, cultural, and political life.
"The poor treatment of the Windrush Generation is an outright scandal. They and their families have been put through appalling stress, hardship, and indignity and it is inexcusable that so few have received support through the Windrush Compensation Scheme. We call upon the Government to address this grave injustice and correct the wrongs of the Home Office in destroying their paperwork and not keeping adequate records.
"Manchester stands with the Windrush Generation, and all who have been affected by this lack of support. Manchester citizens seeking help can contact Manchester City Council or partner organisations such as Citizens Advice Bureau secure in the knowledge that their confidence will be maintained. We will work alongside credible organisations until justice has been achieved for the Windrush Generation."
