Manchester Art Gallery
Manchester Art Gallery will be increasing the number of days a week it opens from five to six from April 1, coinciding with a last chance to see the popular Derek Jarman Protest! exhibition before it ends.
Since reopening following its forced closure during the pandemic, the gallery has been operating reduced opening hours to comply with the various Covid restrictions in place at different times, gradually increasing them when restrictions have allowed to meet visitor demand.
Currently the gallery is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays each week, but from the start of April it will just be closed on Mondays, opening again on Tuesdays to the public from Tuesday April 5, between 10 am and 5 pm each day.
Not only do the extended opening hours mean more time for visitors to see Protest! before it closes on April 10, it also gives them more time to visit the rest of the gallery's internationally significant collection - all free of charge - including Out of the Crate featuring historic and contemporary sculpture, Trading Stations which looks at the history of hot drinks, and a new display exploring the climate emergency.
There's no longer any need to pre-book free tickets to visit the gallery, art-lovers can just turn up on the day and enjoy what the gallery has to offer.
With tasty treats available all day in the gallery cafe, and lots to browse and buy in the gallery shop, as well as a chance to enjoy the tranquil surroundings outside the gallery in the newly-created Derek Jarman Pocket Park, the gallery has something for everyone.
There will also be lots going on at the gallery during the school Easter holidays to keep all the family entertained as the gallery joins the rest of the city in helping make 2022 a year of activity and opportunity for its children and young people through the city-wide '2022 Our Year' campaign.
From 6 to 16 April between 1 and 3 pm join guest scientist Aled Deakin Roberts, who is researching how to create new strong materials from waste products. Families are invited to come along and experiment and invent their own new materials by combining waste products in Field Station - Bio Blitzing! which takes place in the Lion's Den at the Clore Studio and outside in the Derek Jarman Pocket Park.
The Lion's Den is also the place for youngsters to go to find free-to-use drawing materials, table tennis, and to join in with Den-building sessions.
