Exhibitions, live music, talks, theatre performances and storytelling are all part of Manchester Libraries’ celebration of this year’s Black History Month. All events are free to attend.
Black History Month has taken place every October for more than 35 years, across the UK.
This year’s headline event is the ‘We are Carnival’ celebration at Central Library on Thursday 27 October. The event, run by the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre based in Central Library, will feature a live music session with a DJ, a book display, spoken word poetry by local artists, food and a craft session for families
The carnival history workshops on 5 October and 26 October will be delivered by historian Linford Sweeney and will celebrate the history of the carnival and will educate residents on the important origins of the African Caribbean communities in Manchester. For the family workshop there will also be a craft session running alongside for younger children.
There will also be other events across the city, including a Black History Month family Storytime session held in collaboration with HOME in Central Library, Longsight Library and Powerhouse Library to engage younger readers in diverse literature. In addition to this, there will be family craft activities at Forum in Wythenshawe and Didsbury Library for younger residents and families to enjoy.
In addition to this, Linford Sweeney will be delivering an online session on the rich history of Manchester’s Caribbean Carnival; the event has been run in collaboration with Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society and Archives+.
